Among the most common cures for hair loss are medicines known to be effective in hair loss especially in men as well as various lotions, medicines and certain herbal products. Apart from all these products known to have limited effectiveness, hair transplantation seems to be the most profound solution. There are 2 main techniques applied for hair transplantation. These are FUT (follicular unit transplantation) and FUE (Follicular unit extraction). Follicular unit is the name given to the skin structure that contains 1-5 (usually 2-3) pieces of hair follicles. With the FUT method which is also known as the classical hair transplantation method, a slice of skin tissue is taken from the hairy part at the back of the head between the two ears. This tissue is divided into units (grafts) that contain 1, 2 or 3 hair roots. These units are then transplanted in the hairless areas of the head. With the FUE method which is also known as the stitchless method, there is no need to cut tissue as in FUT method. With this method, hair roots are removed one by one using a micro-engine with specially designed blades on it. The parts where the roots are removed would heal on their own and no scar remains at the back of the head because no incision is made. FUE method which was applied in 2004 for the first time is preferred more by the patients as it results in faster healing and leaves no scar on the skin. Regardless of the method in use, hair transplantation is a surgical intervention and should be carried out by surgeons in a hospital setting. The crucial point with hair transplantation is to make a transplantation that looks as natural as possible and cannot be distinguished from natural hair. Thus, the surgical method applied, the angle and intensity of channels where hair is implanted, and the amount of hair transplanted is very important. Patients with light colored skin and hair, curly or wavy hair, or patients with plenty of hair in the donor area are the best candidates for hair transplantation. |
